Training Yorkshire Terriers
Yorkies may seem
excitable (perhaps due to their yapping and playfulness),
but they can easily be trained to perform many simple tasks.
Yorkshire Terrier when trained are very enjoyable pets. but any pet
untrained can become a burden.
Basically, Yorkshire Terrier training begins virtually at birth. After
eight weeks, and up to approximately 14 weeks, dogs are ready to bond for a
lifetime with a new master.
Even adult Yorkie Terriers can adapt to a new master, but the ideal
situation for training is to raise a puppy from early life.
True training, in the sense of taking a Yorkshire Terrier to a formal class
and developing very specific behaviors, does not begin until the age of four to
six months. It is possible to try earlier but it could be a struggle. Attending
so-called puppy kindergarten, where both dog and master learn to work
together.
Most training revolves around giving your Yorkie Terrier treats and praise
when it obeys, and withholding treats and praise when it does not. A sharp "No"
can also be useful.
Yorkshire Terriers are small indeed, usually not weighing more than about 5
or 6 pounds (less than 3kg.) A Yorkie can easily be carried in a large coat
pocket or a small bag.
Their coats are typically black or grey on the body, with more brown and
gold on the faces and legs. Yorkies can also have somewhat wavy fur, Yorkie
fur is soft, fine, and high-maintenance, and must either be trimmed short or
washed and brushed frequently.
Unlike some other small breeds Yorkies seem to recognize the limitations of
their size, and are almost never aggressive. Yorkie personalities vary greatly
apart from this, and they might be docile lap dogs or yappy and endlessly
playful. Yorkie Terriers are wonderful pets.
